POKOTABI / Aoimugi
青い麦
At Aoi Mugi in Tabata, a hearty beef-and-beet borscht leads a reassuring menu of kissaten-style Western dishes like hamburg steak and Neapolitan pasta, accompanied by fragrant coffee in an easygoing setting.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Spotting borscht on the menu of a traditional Japanese kissaten brings an unexpected sense of occasion to a casual afternoon. Tucked into the quiet streets of Tabata, Aoi Mugi (青い麦) makes a slow-simmered borscht—filled with beef, cabbage, potatoes, and beets—one of its defining signature dishes. Served with your choice of rice or toast, it is an ideal centerpiece when you are looking for a genuinely substantial meal.
The dining options go well beyond braised comfort food. The hamburg steak, served with a fried egg and salad, comes with either rich demi-glace or a Japanese-style sauce made with grated daikon and nametake mushrooms. Familiar Western-style cafe fare covers plenty of ground, from pasta favorites such as Neapolitan and Bolognese to seafood pilaf and a spicy beef curry.
For an afternoon pause or a finish to the meal, the drink list reflects classic coffee-shop sensibilities. Alongside a clean-finishing house blend and iced coffee, the selection extends to café au lait, whipped-cream Vienna coffee, melon cream soda, freshly squeezed fruit juices, and milkshakes.
Mellow lighting and a calm interior make the room well suited to solitary reading or quiet contemplation. Open from morning into the early evening even on Sundays, it provides an inviting rest stop during a neighborhood walk to settle in for warm comfort food and a freshly brewed cup.
